     Ruth Stratton was the daughter of John Stratton and Sarah. She married James White on 24 November 1675 at Southampton, Long Island, New York.¹ Ruth died circa 1694.

      Two families of this name cme to Southampton, the first, that of John b. White, about 1644. He was a resident of Lynn in 1630, freeman there in 1633, and made freeman in Southampton in 1647. The other family descended from the seventh pastor of the church, Rev. Sylvanus White, who was the son of Rev. Ebenezzer
White, of Bridgehampton. Both of these families, however, are said to have common ancestor, Thomas White of Weymouth, MA. He was Reprensentative in General court in 1636 and 1637. He die August 1679, leaving , according to Farmer, 1st Joseph of Mendon; 2 Samuel of Weymouth, b 1642, admitted freeman 1666, representative 1679, and died without issue, 3d Thomas of Braintree, 4th Hannah, who m. John Baxter, and 5th Ebenezer b. 1648, and died Aug. 24, 1703, and father of Rev. Sylvanus of Southampton. John, the first of this name is Southampton, is thought to be another son of Thomas of Weymouth, not being mentioned in his will, because he died in 1662, before his father. This is possible as Thomas of Weymouth was born in 1599.

      John Stratton moved to East Hampton, his name being in the list of the nine first settlers of that town. The earliest record know of John Stratton of East Hampton, Long Island.
      "November 19, 1644. The petition that was presented by John Stratton and Thomas Talmage Junior, for the quiet and peaceable inioyment of the lott betwixt them which formerly was graunted unto widow Bancroft, was graunted and consented unto by the Generall Court prouided that they shall keep, improue and possesse the sayd lott in theire handes three yeares after the tyme yt was by the sayd widdow Bancroft giuen unto them."

      In the list of property holders and land in East Hampton, Long Island, June 10, 1652;
      " John Straton ffouer ackers vppon the litel plaine be it more or lese bounded with the hieway South and Thomas Talmage unior West and on the North parte agt Luke Lillie and part agt Richard Stratton and the hieway East.

      This family is without question descended from the Herricks of Leicestershire in England, as the crest of that family is engraved on the tombstone of William Herrick, the son of James Herrick, the first of the name in Southampton. This is said because at the time of the death of William Herrick men in this country had not begun to use arms, as they did at a later period and do now, to which they are not entitled. From the Genealogical Register of the Herrick family, issued by Jedediah Herrick in 1846, we learn that "in the year 1598 was granted, from the Herald's office, unto Robert and William Herick, the sonnes of John Herick, the sonne of Thomas Herick alias Erick of Houghton, in the countie of Leicester, gentleman, and their posteritie forever, a certeyne crest or badge, namelie: on a wreathe of their couloures a bull's head argent, yssuing forthe of a laurell garland. The mussel, eares and hornes tipped sable. To be a fesse verray, orr and gules. Motto: "Virtus omnia nobiltat."

      The name Horton came from the English word "horr" meaning "ravine" or "a town in the ravine".
      Baranabas Horton
      may have been from the small hamlet of Horton, Buckinghamshire, England; fourteen miles from London and four miles from Leighton Buzzard. However, more likely he was born on 13 July 1600 in Mowsley, (Mousley) Leicestershire, England. An historically important area, Leicestershire was the earldom of Simon b. de Montfort, leader of the baron's revolt against Henry III which brought about the first parliament. Leicester Castle, a Saxon stronghold, was rebuilt by Normans in 1086. Cardinal Wolsey died in the abbey there in 1530. Mowsley, however, eventually disappeared from English maps.
     
     
      According to Warren Hall's 'Pagans, Puritans, Patriots of Yesterday's Southold", Barnabas Horton was a "big, strong, ruddy-faced, genial man" who was a baker by trade, but could make a living doing almost anything.
     
     
      In 1635, Anne Smith Horton and their two young children emigrated with Barnabas on board the "Swallow" to settle in Hampton, Massachusetts where Barnabas had a grant of land. Captain Jeremiah or Jeremy Horton was master and owner of the "Swallow" from 1635 to 1638. On October 21, 1641, with a different wife, Barnabas was one of the organizers of the Congregational Church of the new town of Southold, Long Island.
     
     
      As a leading citizen of Southold, he went on to serve as deputy of the General Court in New Haven during years between 1654 and 1664. He became a freeman of Connecticut Colony in 1662 and was on of the town's patentees, along with his son Joshua in 1676. Barnabas built the first frame home on eastern Long Island. Barnabas and four of his sons are said to have had the most land and wealth 1188 pounds worth - of the 82 taxpayers of Southold in 1675. Agriculture was the main source of their wealth. A new crop, tobacco, had brought them high prices abroad giving them a lucrative business. The new industry also brought slaves to the area. In the late 1600's, there were 800 whites, 40 Indians and, 41 blacks in Southold.

Barnabas was born on 13 July 1600 at Mowsley, county Leicestershire, England.¹ He was the son of Joseph Horton.       Jonathan Horton was the first Captain of the first company of cavalry ever organized in Suffolk Co., L.I., NY, and his brother Joshua was 1st Lieutenant of the same company.
     
      He and his wife were worthy members of the Southold Church, and highly esteemed in all the relations which they sustained.
