John Jennings
M, d. 18 June 1722
When our heathen ancestors adopted the Christian faith they assumed Christian names as evidences of their conversion. On account of the prominence in the early Church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Ebangelist, the name Iohanan, or Ioannes, afterward shortened to Ian, Iohn, or John, became a favorite. When the Saxon suffix ing, signigying son, was added, it gave the parronymic Ianing or Janing, that is John's son which finally became Jennings, which form has prevailed for many centuries, though the name is spelled in more than thirty ways in the early records of Massachuetts.
John Jennings, the first of the family of whom there is authentic information, was living at Sandwich in 1667, and died there at an advanced age. John was perhaps a Quaker, was among the residents of Sandwich who were able to make it appear that they had just rights and title to the privileges of the town. He died intestate and his estate was administered by his son Isaac.
He married Susanna NN----.1 He married Ruhamah NN---- on 29 June 1667 at Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.2,3 John died on 18 June 1722 at Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.1
