      Thomas married early which was common in those days, the first settlers not unfrequently becoming heads of families before reaching their majoity. He came over in the Mary and John, and settled in Dorchester. He requested to be made a freeman 19th Oct. of that year, and was admitted 18 May 1631. He removed in a few years to Scituate, and was one of the earliest of the company who came to Barnstable. Thomas was an Innkeeper (on 3 December 1639 allowed by Plymouth General Court "to keep victualling or an ordinary, for entertainment of passengers, and to draw wine at Barnstable, he keeping good order in his house. In Mr. Lothrop's diary, in speaking of the arrival of his immediate company in town, it is recorded: "After praises to God in public were ended, as the day was cold we divided into three companies, to feast together, some at Mr. Hull's, some at Mr. Mayo's and some at brother Lombard, Sr's." These were presumably the three largest and most eligible houses in the settlement, and this passage indicates the standing and means of their possessors. In 1639 the court record states that "Thomas Lumbert is allowed to keep victualling, or an ordinary for the entertainment of strangers, and to draw wines in Barnstable.
     
      Barnstable, MA, will of Thomas Lombard, 23 March 1662. To his wife-Son Caleb, his house...To sons Jebdeiah and Benjamin... It mentions that he formerly gave property to his sons Barnard, Joshua, Joseph, and his son in law Edward Coleman. It mentions his daughter Margaret Coleman...his granchild Abigail.

John Derby is found at Plymouth in New England in 1637, being granted threescore acres of land at Mounts Hill by the Coutrt of Assistants on 6 Aug. go that year. (Plymouth Colony Records, Court Orders, vol 1 pg 64) He had probably accompanied his brother Richard to Plymouth or had crossed the Atlantic abouth the same time as his brother. On 4 Dec. 1637 Mr. John Darbys former graunt at Mounts Hill was confirmed by the Court of Assistants.

About 1643 John Derby removed to Yarmouth, and his name appears in that year on the Yarmouth list of men able to bear arms. He was a supervisor of the highways at Yarmouth 1 June 1647 and on 14 May 1648, at Yarmouth, wher Captain Standish had been authorized by the Court held at Plymouth 7 Mar 1647 to hold hearing and to put an end to all differences remaining in the town of Yarmouth, it was granted to John Darby to haue six acares of meadow in the Easteren Swan Pond Meadowe, in lewe of 4 acars dew to William Chase, for a debt the town owed him.
