The name is usually spelled Brownson on the Hartford and Brunson on the Farmington records. John Bronson, the father of the Waterbury Bronsons, was early in Hartford. lHe is believed, though not certainly known, to have been one of the company who came with Mr. Hooker, in 1635 on the "Defence", of whose church he was a member. He was a soldier in the bloody Pequot battle of 1637. He is not named among the proprietors of Hartford in the land division of 1639; but is mentioned in the same year in the list of settlers, who, by the "towne's courtesie" had liberty "to getch woode and keepe swine or cowes on the common." His house lot was in the "soldiers field," so called, in the north part of the old village of Hartford, on the " Neck Road" (supposed to have been given for service in the Pequot war) where he lived in 1640. Hinman, in his "First Puritan Settlers," thinks that his father, then an aged man, owning no land, Richard by name, was with him. Nov. 9th 1640, He (John Bronson) and Andrew Warner were fined five shillings "for putting their hogs over the Great River, and five shillings for every day they left them there.

After the purchase of Tunxis (Farmington) by the Hartford people, John Bronson, about 1641, removed to that place. His house lot was on a road running out of the village in an easterly direction and half a mile distant. (Richard Bronson, supposed to have been his brother, also an original proprietor and from Hartford, lived near by.) He was one of the seven pillars at the organization of Farmington church, in 1652. He was a deputy to the General Court, in May, 1651 and at several subsequent sessions, and "the constable of Garmington," who collected the rate for "ye Fort at Seabrook," in 1652. May 10th, 1670, "Cherry and will the indian with three of the milford indians were adjudged to pay to him for sider they stole from him twenty shillings." His name is on the list of Freemen of Farmington in 1669.

John was born in 1602 at Lamarsh, county Essex, England.1 He was the son of Roger Brownson and Marie or Mary Underwood. He was baptized on 21 September 1602 at Lamarsh, county Essex, England. He married Frances Hills on 19 November 1626 at Halstead, county Essex, England.2 John was present at Mary Bronson'S christening on 12 December 1627 at England.3 John was present at Dorcas Bronson'S christening on 19 December 1633 at England.3 John immigrated to (an unknown value) in 1636.4 John was present at Isaac Bronson'S christening on 7 December 1645.3 John was present at Abraham Bronson'S christening on 28 November 1647.3 John died on 28 November 1680 at Farmington, Connecticut.5

Francis Hills, whose baptism was not found in the Parish Registers of Halstead, but who may have been an unrecorded daughter of either Anthony or William Hills of Halstead, or may have been related to them in some other way. The given name of the wife of John Brownson is not mentioned in any New England record that has been seen, and it is possible that Frances (Hills) Brownson died, and that the cildren born in Connecticut were by a subsequent wife. But it is felt that Frances was his only wife, and mother of all his children. The name Frances is not biblical and was therefore not at all in favor with Puritans. Yet Abraham Brunson, the youngest son of John Brownson, gave to one of his daughters the un-Puritan name fo Frances, and it is hard to see why he should have done this unless he were commemorating his mother. The widow of John Brownson survived her husband, but her death was not recorde at Farmington or elsewhere in Connecticut. It has been speculated that William Hills, the future settler in Hartford, was perhaps baptized at Upminster, co. Essex, 27 Dec. 1608. It seems quite possible that there may have been a relationship between the different branches of the Hills family in Essex, and that Willliam Hills and his contemporary Frances Hills Brownson may have been akin. But all this is conjecture and the matter needs futher study.

[S584] Unknown subject unknown repository, But no children were found for this couple in the parish registers, and no further evidence beyond the names and timing, until the will of Augustine Walker was discovered in December 2002 by Edward Davies. In the will of Augustine Walker, dated April 1613, he mentions "my daughter Elizabeth Warren wife of Richard Warren", and "her three children Mary, Ann and Sarah." We know that the Mayflower passenger's first three children were named Mary, Ann, and Sarah (in that birth order), and that they were born c1610, c1612, and c1614, so this put the nail in the coffin and we can say with near certainty that Richard Warren of the Mayflower married in Great Amwell, Hertford to Elizabeth Walker, daughter of Augustine Walker. Additional research is currently being sponsored by MayflowerHistory.com to see if anything further can be learned about these families.
