      Thomas Dunham, was incline to side with the Reformers in his faith. In 1605, the feeling against the Puritans and Catholics was high and Thomas felt it to such an extent that he took his family from Scrooby to London, where Robert was born in 1605. In 1635 Robert's name is on the list of the "George Jo Scvcrne" which transported a number of individuals to Virginia, because of the matters touching their conformity in religion. There is no record of Robert after the boat arrived in Virginia, so it is surmised he died soon after leaving. He was a lad of 5, when his brother John left London for Leyden, following King James edict that "all over the age of 16 must attend the Established Church".
     
     
      The Dunhams and collateral branches, especially the Zouches, were ardent supporters of the Established Church and bitter opponents of the Puritans, so that members of the Dunham family who sided with the Puritans were persecuted by members of their own family. Thomas had sympathy for the dissenters, as had his mother; in the children of Thomas, we find both John and Robert decided dissenters from the established faith and both suffered persecutions of the times.
     
     
      Thomas's son John, born 1588, and Edmund Zouche, Councillor of King James, and violent persecutor of the Dissenters, were both practically the same age and both of the same degree of descent from Lord John Zouche. After King James' edict in 1608, commanding attendance at church, John, escaped to Holland. There he became a man of toil and learned the trade of a weaver. After his second marriage, he joined the colony in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
