      The Name Phinney first appears in this country about 1637. The name is variously written; it appears under the form of Geney, Giney, Finney, Finny, Phenney, Phine, Phiney, Phinney, Phyney and Pleney. Ancient spelling: Fenis, de Fienes, and De Fiennes.
     
     
      In early days many names took the dimunitive form by adding ey. The name might come from the Latin "finis" (the end and mean a man who lived at the end of a cape or point of land.
     
     
      In the New York Public Library may be found a copy of "The Cheshire and Lancashire Historical Collector," edited by T. Worthington Barlow, Manchester, 1855. which carries the family back to "Lord Baron Fenis, 1066, a kinsman of King William the Conqueror."
     
     
      "Ingelram de Fiennes, a lord in Boulogne, who lost his life at Acon, 1189, married before 1171, Lady Sybilla de Boulogne de Tingrie. Maude, daughter of Ingelram de Fiennes, married Humphrey de Bohum (d. 1298). He and Roger Bigod ruled England under Edward I, the most powerful of all barons.
     
     
      William de Fines feudal lord of Martock, Somerset, of which manor he had livery, in 1207-08 on quit claim of his mother. He died in 1240-40. Bartholomew de Hampden (a descendant of Baldwin de Hampden, who was of note before the Norman invasion) married a daughter of Lord William de Fienes."
     
     
      The first members of the Phinney family to reach this country, were Mother Phinney withat least three children, or she may have accompanied her two sons and daughter. They came over from England and settled in Plymouth, Ma, before 1637. Mother Phinney was probably born in England. Some genealogists give her name as Catherine, but no proof that this was her correct name could be found.

     She married Joseph Collier circa 1661.¹ NN---- died before 1676 at Hartford, Connecticut.¹

     Elizabeth was born on 19 February 1645/46 at Hartford, Connecticut.^2,3,4 She was the daughter of Robert Sanford and Ann Adams. She married Joseph Collier in 1667 at Hartford, Connecticut.^2,5,6 Elizabeth was present at Ann Collier's christening in 1687 at Hartford, Connecticut.⁷ Elizabeth died in 1695 at Hartford, Connecticut.⁸ Elizabeth had her will probated on 27 December 1695.⁴

     Mary died. Mary was born on 9 April 1662 at Salisbury, Connecticut.² She was the daughter of Joseph Collier.

     Joseph was born in 1668 at Hartford, Connecticut.² He was the son of Joseph Collier and Elizabeth Sanford. Joseph died.

     Mary was born in 1669 at Hartford, Connecticut.² She was the daughter of Joseph Collier and Elizabeth Sanford. Mary died.

     Sarah died. Sarah was born in 1673 at Hartford, Connecticut.² She was the daughter of Joseph Collier and Elizabeth Sanford.

     Abel died. Abel was born in 1677 at Hartford, Connecticut.¹ He was the son of Joseph Collier and Elizabeth Sanford.

     John died. John was born in 1679 at Hartford, Connecticut.¹ He was the son of Joseph Collier and Elizabeth Sanford.

     Abigail was born in 1682 at Hartford, Connecticut.¹ She was the daughter of Joseph Collier and Elizabeth Sanford.

     Susannah died. Susannah was born in 1684 at Hartford, Connecticut.² She was the daughter of Joseph Collier and Elizabeth Sanford.

     Ann died. Ann was born circa 1687 (chr. date) at Hartford, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Joseph Collier and Elizabeth Sanford. She was christened in 1687 at Hartford, Connecticut.²

Robert was born at Stanstead Mountfitchet, county Essex, England. He was the son of Ezekiel Sandford and Rose Warner. He married Ann Adams in 1643 at Hartford, Connecticut.^2,3,4 Robert died in June 1676 at Hartford, Connecticut.⁵

     Ann Adams was the daughter of Jeremy Adams and Rebecca NN----.
      Mrs. Sandford made her will 12 July 1682, and it was presented to the County Court on the 7th of the following September. In it she mentions the kindly care of her daughters Hannah and Abigail, who have been "tender" of her all along and "abode" with her, and of her son Robert who also "hath abode" with her and "carried on her occasions" and provided for her the seven years past. She married Robert Sanford in 1643 at Hartford, Connecticut.^2,3,4 Ann died in 1682 at Hartford, Connecticut.⁵

     Zachary was born at Hartford, Connecticut.^2,3 He was the son of Robert Sanford and Ann Adams. Zachary died.

     Ezekiel died. Ezekiel was born on 13 March 1647/48 at Hartford, Connecticut.^2,3 He was the son of Robert Sanford and Ann Adams.

     Mary died. Mary was born at Hartford, Connecticut.² She was the daughter of Robert Sanford and Ann Adams.

     Sarah died. Sarah was born at Hartford, Connecticut.² She was the daughter of Robert Sanford and Ann Adams.

     Robert died. Robert was born at Hartford, Connecticut.² He was the son of Robert Sanford and Ann Adams.

     Hannah died. Hannah was born at Hartford, Connecticut.² She was the daughter of Robert Sanford and Ann Adams.

     Abigail died. Abigail was born at Hartford, Connecticut.² She was the daughter of Robert Sanford and Ann Adams.

      Jeremy Adams came from Engalnd with Rev. Mr. Hooker's Company. This company settled first at Braintree but removed soon to Cambridge, MA, then called Newtown, where Jeremy was as early as 1632. He was made freeman at Cambridge, May 6, 1635 and Proprietors' Records of the town show that he was in possession of a house-lot there in Oct. of the same year.
     
     
      On the removal of Mr. Hooker's Company to Hartford, in 1636, Jeremy Adams was one of the number and became an original propietor of that town; and according to Mr. Hinman, he was a juror and deputy to the General court in 1638. Apr. 5, 1638, he was sent, with Capt. Mason and four others by the General Court, to treat with the Indians and to trade them for Corn (Public Records of Connecticut). In the land division of 1639, he received thirty acres on the highway, now Elm street; and was constable that year.
     
     
      About 1639, he married first, Rebecca, widow of Samuel Greenhill, perphaps as a second wife. Greenhill had come from Staplehurst, Co. Kent, England, in the same ship with Simon Willard.
     
     
      March 5 1644, The General court ordered Jeremy Adams to appear at the next General court to receive censure for adhering to Thomas Asmor, encouraging him to resist an officer; and especially for his "passionat distempered speeches, lowd language and unmannerly caredge in the face of the Court (Public Records Connecticut). The General court on March 13, 1661; granted to Jeremy Adams 300 acres of upland and 40 acres of meadow on the road going to Monhegin. About the same time the Court established Jeremy as keeper of the "Ordinary." This tavern was on the site of the present Universalist church. He bought the lot of John Morrice and mortaged it to the Colony, Jan. 26, 1660. According to Public Records of Conn., he was established "Custome Master" for Hartford by the General Court, May 14, 1663. He was freed from watching and warding at the age of sixty, March 2, 1664, and served as "townsman" in 1671.
     
Jeremy was born.² Jeremy immigrated to (an unknown value) before 1632.³ He became a freeman on 6 May 1635.³ He married Rebecca NN---- circa 1639 at Hartford, Connecticut.³ Jeremy was present at Samuel Adams'S christening on 23 November 1645.⁴ He married Rebecca Fletcher after 1678/79.³ Jeremy died on 11 August 1683 at Hartford, Connecticut.³

     Was widow of Samuel Greenhill. She married Jeremy Adams circa 1639 at Hartford, Connecticut.² Rebecca was present at Samuel Adams's christening on 23 November 1645.³ Rebecca died in 1678 at Hartford, Connecticut.²

     Her body was interred at in King's Chapel Boston, Massachusetts.² Elizabeth was born circa 1607.² She married Edward Raynsford in 1633 at prob. Boston, Massachusetts.^3,4 Elizabeth was present at Solomon Rainsford's christening on 25 December 1648.⁵ Elizabeth was present at Elizabeth Rainsford's christening on 25 December 1648.⁵ Elizabeth was present at Edward Rainsford's christening on 15 August 1654.⁵ Elizabeth died on 16 November 1688 at Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.^6,2

     Nathan was born in June 1641.¹ He was the son of Edward Raynsford and Elizabeth Dillie or Dilloe ?.

     David was born in July 1644.¹ He was the son of Edward Raynsford and Elizabeth Dillie or Dilloe ?.
