He was a yeoman.
John was rather sickly and left his wife with four children and clearly in need of more help than other members of the family. Summary of his Will:
Archdeaconry of Taunton, 1627-61.
John Hull of Crewkerne, yeoman, of a weak and consuming body, dated 21 September 1627. I do desire of my wife that all my children, born and to be born, may be brought and taught in the true religion and fear of God, learned out of the Holy Scriptures, as it is now taught amongst us: and that they may all set and kept unto some school or other as soon as they shall be capable of teaching and so continued until they can all read the English Bible well and my sons until they can write fitting for any trade and my desire is that they shall be placed with sound and honest men when they go any of them to masters or else marry with sound young fellows and to be placed by the advice of my wife and the most of my overseers of this my will.
To each of my sons and daughters born or to be born a new English Bible of the old translation with....notes, if they my be gotten, for their greater comfort. To my son Francis 5 lbs to be paid at his age 21 or marriage or before if my wife and overseers think fit. To my son Isaac 15 lbs to be paid at such time as above. To my daughter Ruth, 20 marks, in the same manner. To the child my wife now goeth with 20 marks as above. My wife shall keep the portions of my children for buying (bringing?) them up. If my wife shall be deposed to marry she shall give security to my children for the payment of their portions. Edith my wife shall have for her life all my interest in a piece of ground called Cleeves and after her death Francis my son shall have it but if Francis shall die before 21 or be married my son Isaac shall enjoy it and if both of my sons die the rest of my children shall have it during the time therein still to come. My wife shall have my barn that I have in the South Street with 2.....(acres?) of ground and a backside during her life, if George Hull, my brother and the widow Bats so long live. After the death of my wife my son Isaac shall enjoy the same for residue term of tarm but if he dies before my wife then my daughter Ruth shall have it. Residue to my wife, Edith, executrix.
Overseers, my brother Joseph, my brother George and Robert Licolne, my friend. Witnesses, Joseph Hull, William Gaylord, Giles Gibbes.
