     Mary was born on 1 March 1673/74 at Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.¹ She was the daughter of Deacon John Hall and Priscilla Bearse.

     Martha was born on 24 May 1676 at Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.¹ She was the daughter of Deacon John Hall and Priscilla Bearse.

     Nathaniel was born on 15 September 1678 at Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.¹ He was the son of Deacon John Hall and Priscilla Bearse.

     COMMENTS:     Savage and Wyman suggest that this John Hall came from Coventry in England, but there is no evidence for this whatsoever. Banks offers St. Mary Whitechapel, London, as an origin for this man, but cites only "Banks Mss.," so not much weight should be put on this claim either, without further exploration [Topo Dict 102].
John Hall was admitted as an inhabitant of Charlestown in April 1633 [CHTR 91. He appeared in the lists of Charlestown inhabitants dated 9 January 1633/4 and January 1635/6 [CHTR 10, 15]. He signed his name to the town agreement which established the office of selectman, IO February 1634/5 [CHTR 13], and on I May 1637 he was warned about making encroachments on the common CHTR 281.
Both Savage and Pope muddled this John Hall and one or two others. Savage combined the records of this John Hall with those of a second man of the same name at -Charlestown, whereas Pope distributed the records of two John Halts and one Samuel Hall across two entries under the name of John Hall. Jacobus sorted out the confusion in a long note published in 1948 Brainerd Anc 142-431; the critical point is to watch the name Bethia as wife of John.
The gap of six years between the first record of Bethia as wife of John Hall (2 November 1632) and the first record of a baptism for a child (I 3 May 1638) is puzzling. The eldest son, Samuel, was very likely born during this period, say in 1636, but this still leaves a sizable gap; and if John and Bethia Hall were residing in Charlestown throughout this period, why wasn't a baptism for Samuel recorded? One possible solution derives from the problematic nature of the early Charlestown church records, which were recopied some years after the date of the events recorded. Savage demonstrated that the Charlestown church records have RICHARD KETTLE married to his wife ESTHER WARD some time before the marriage actually took place. The same may have happened with John and Bethia. If that is true John and Bethia may not have married until about 1636, and if she were from some place other than Charlestown, perhaps Samuel was baptized there, in a church whose records no longer exist. This proposed solution may also explain the gap of four years between John Hall's admission to Boston church and his admission as a freeman, for he may not yet have been twenty-one in 1630.
On 8 June 1655 concerning a "complaint made by John Hall, of Yarmouth, against Francis Baker, of the same town, for abusing Samuel Hall, his son, and ser[vant to the said Baker, by kicking of him and otherwise unreasonably striking of him, the Court have ordered, that the[ said Samuel Hall shall be and continue with his father until the next Court of elections" [PCR 3:83]; the controversy was ended when on 7 August 1655 the court ordered John Hall to pay Francis Baker ;E8 for the remainder of Samuel Hall's time [PCR 3:88].

      He joined the First Church of Charlestown at its organization, July 30, 1630. In 1632 a majority of the members being on that side of the Charles river organized the First Church of Boston, among the number being John Hall and his wife Bethia. He had Lot No. 48 in 1633, and was admitted a freeman May 14, 1634. About 1640 he became a resident of Barnstable, and was on the list of those able to bear arms in 1643. In 1653 he was a resident of Yarmouth, in that part of the town later set off as Dennis. Also in 1653 he was listed as a Surveyor. His will is dated 15 July 1694, and proved 29 August 1696. He is buried on his farm."

     Bethia was born.¹ She married John Hall circa 1636.² Bethia was present at Shebar Hall's christening on 9 February 1639/40 at Charlestown, Suffolk, Massachusetts.³ Bethia died on 1 February 1683 at Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts.

     Samuel was born before 1637 at Charlestown, Suffolk, Massachusetts.¹ He was the son of John Hall and Bethia NN----. Samuel died on 20 January 1694/95.²

     Joseph was born on 3 July 1642 at Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.¹ He was the son of John Hall and Elizabeth Larned.

     He was baptized on 8 June 1651 at Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts. William was born circa 1651.¹ He was the son of John Hall and Bethia NN----. William died on 19 February 1726 at Mansfield, Connecticut.

     He was baptized on 29 May 1653 at Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts. Benjamin was born circa 1653.² He was the son of John Hall and Bethia NN----.

     Elisha died. Elisha was born circa 1655.² He was the son of John Hall and Bethia NN----.

      "Augustine Bearse came to Barnstable with the first company in 1639. His house lot, containing twelve acres of very rocky land, was in the westerly part of the East Parish. He was one of the very few against who no complaint was ever made; a fact which speaks well for his character as a man and a citizen. He was a farmer, lived on the produce of his land, and brought up his large family to be like himself, useful members of society. He became a member of Mr. Lothrop's church, April 29, 1643. His name stands at the head of the list, he being the first who joined after its removal to Barnstable. He appears to have been very exact in the performance of his religious duties, causing his children to be baptized on the Sabbath next following the day of their birth. His son Joseph was born on Sunday and was carried two miles to the church and baptized the same day. Many believed in those times that children dying unbaptized were lost, and it was consequently the duty of the parent to present his child early for baptism. Goodman Bearse was influenced by this feeling; he did not wish, by a week's delay. to peril the eternal salvation of his child."

Henry Cogan, father and grandfather of emigrants from England to America, may have been son to Henry Cogan who married in Chedzoy, 1 July 1565, Elizabeth Carye. His own baptism has not been found. Antecedents of Joane Boridege, Henry's wife, are not known.

His will describes him as a clothier, of Taunton, and is dated 27 November 1612, probated 29 June 1613 (PCC 52 Capell: it has been searched for at Taunton and not found) This will is curious: the sum of £10 is left to each of the six daughters (Johane, Judith, Mary, Elizabeth, Anne, and Frances), to be paid at their respective marriages, and if any marry without consent of their mother, they are to lose their shares for five years. Of the sons, only John is mentioned, and he is to have merely three pairs of loambes (gloves) furnished with fleece "and suck like things as belong unto them", and this only on the day of his marriage. Since the marriage is still in the future (it actually took place on 26 June 1615), there can be no question of a previous marriage settlement. If John is already in business and, upon embarking in the mercantile world, has gotten his patrimony in advance, then the omission of Richard, baptized 17 January 1602, and of Henry, baptized 6 April 1607, is certainly odd. It cannot be argued that Richard has died vita patris, for his burial took place 6 September 1620, and we have good reason to suppose that Henry was still alive in 1612 and for many years after. John might have been his father's partner, but the other sons were too young for that. Moreover, had there been a partnership, we should probably have heard of it in the will. The wife Johane is named executrix and residuary legatee; Richard Savidge and Jasper Chapline, friends of testator, are named overseers, each to have 12d. This Henry Cogan was not a wealthy man. ¹ Henry was born circa 1566 at Taunton, county Somerset, England.^2,1 He was the son of Henry Cogan and Elizabeth Carye. He married Joane Boridge on 30 November 1590 at Taunton, county Somerset, England.^2,1 Henry was present at Judith Cogan'S christening on 13 June 1594 at Taunton, county Somerset, England.³ His body was interred on 1 December 1612 at Taunton, county Somerset, England, St. Mary Magdalen.¹ Henry died in December 1612.¹

     Joane was born at Taunton, county Somerset, England.² She married Henry Cogan on 30 November 1590 at Taunton, county Somerset, England.^2,3 Joane was present at Judith Cogan's christening on 13 June 1594 at Taunton, county Somerset, England.⁴

     William was born.^1,2 He married Judith Cogan on 13 April 1618 at Taunton, county Somerset, England.^1,2 William died circa 1619.^1,2

     Samuel was born circa 1619.¹ He was the son of William King and Judith Cogan.

     He married Lydia Huit on 20 April 1656 at Hartford, Connecticut.¹ Joseph died in 1689.²
