Robert Clements was bried at Croft, county Leicestershire, England 26 June 1606. He was the overseer of his father's will in 1571-2, and in that same year he paid a tax of five shillings as a resident of Croft. In the Duchy of Lancaster Court Rolls (1129:82), 7 October, 13 Elizabeth (1571), he is mentioned with others who "were presented for that, being suitors of the Court, they have made default." He was assoined, that is , excused from attendance. On the 24 March 1572, he was elected constable of Croft in the place of Richard Bent.

Robert Clements of Croft, county Leicestershire, left a will dated 25 May 1606. "In the name of God amen anno domini one thousand sixe hundred and sixe the fiue and Twentith daye of Maye. Richard Clements of Croft, Leicestershire, England, to whom the ancestry of Robert Clements of Haverhill, Massachusetts, has been traced. The place of birth and parentage of Richard Clements are unknown, but his residence at Croft, in the year 1557, has been proved by records which show, that with John Smyth and William Kyng, he made an inventory of the estate of Thomas Crispe of Croft in that year. (Leicester wills, Bundle for 1554-1557)

From 1557 to 1671, the year of his death, his name together with that of his son-in-law, Robert Ives, frequently appears in the records of Croft. In the Duchy of Lancaster Court Rolls, the following reference is found. Shilton: View of Frank Pledge there holden, 15 October, 4 Elizabeth (1562), Croft; Tything men there robert Ives and Richard Clements. There are similar entries for 22 April 1563, 22 October 1564, and 26 April 1565. (Public Record Office, London, court Rolls, 119, No. 81.)

Richard Clements left a will, dated 3 February 1571, which was proved by the executrix, Elizabeth Clements, on 1 March 1571. In it he asks that his body be buried in the church yard of Croft; and bequeaths to the mother church of Lincoln, 2d; to the "poore mens boxe in Crafte church," 4d; to son Robert Clements a mare foal; to son Edward Clements, one ewe; to son Richard Clements, one heifer and six sheep, at the age of fourteen; to Jone, his wife's daughter, a brown heifer called "Lyllye" and 40s; to Mary, his daughter, a cow named Whitefoot; to Isabel Ives, his daughter, a calf. He makes Elizabeth his wife "whom I louve and trust aboue all other nexte vnto God," residuary legatee and executrix; his son Robert Clements, his overseer. Wit: John Gylsonne, Richard Reve, Michell Olyffe with others.

     Inventory of her estate taken 30 May 1670 and totalled £13 5d. 11d; an accounting of "Grandmother Hurst's debts" was prepared after her death [PCPR3:1:18; Scrapbook 68, 90-91]. Geertrud was born circa 1585.³ She married James Hurst on 4 October 1608 at Amsterdam, Holland.³ Geertrud died at Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.

     Elizabeth Southworth was the daughter of Thomas [Captain] Southworth and Elizabeth Raynor. She married Joseph Howland on 7 December 1664.^4,1,2 Elizabeth died in 1717.

     Lydia died. Lydia was born on 9 January 1665 at Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts. He was the son of Lt. John Howland and Mary Lee.

     Edward Southworth of Sturton le Steeple, silk worker. Edward Southworth of Leyden was b. 1590, d ca. 1621. (letter of Robert Cushman to Edward Southworth at Heneage House, London, 17 August 1620, in Bradford's "History of Plimouth Plantation", Boston, 1901, page 86. Edward's wife was a widow in July 1623).




Edward was born circa 1590 at London, county Middlesex, England. He was the son of Thomas Southworth and Rosamund Lister. He married Alice Carpenter on 28 May 1613 at Leyden, Holland.¹ Edward died circa 1621 at London, county Middlesex, England.

     William was born at Austerfield, County Yorkshire, England. He married Alice Carpenter on 14 August 1623 at Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts. William died at Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.

     "Rarely indowed both in Sacred and Civil Respects", arrived, Plymouth, c.1628. Agent at Kennebec, 1651-54, representing stepfather Bradford's interests, asst. govenor, 1652-3, 1657-69, commissioner to New England Confederacy, 1659-61,1654,1667-69.

Thomas Southworth, brother of Constant Southworth, was probably born at Leiden ca 1616-1620. He came to Plymouth sometime after 1627, most likely living with his mother, Alice, and her husband, Gov. William Bradford. He married 1 September 1641 Elizabeth Reyner, daughter of Rev. John Reyner, and they had one child, Elizabeth, who married Joseph Howland. On 28 October 1641 William Bradford gave a house and land "unto my sone-in-law [stepson] Thomas Southworth". He died 8 December 1669. His will dated 18 November 1669, proved 1 March 1669/70, named his wife and his daughter Elizabeth Howland, and her husband Joseph, and left gifts to Thomas Southworth. The Thomas Southworth who came to Plymouth should not be confused with his uncle, Thomas Southworth, who stayed behind in Leiden.

     Son and heir of Sir John Southworth of Samlesbury, co. Lancaster, England. Thomas was born circa 1548 at prob. England. He was the son of Sir John Southworth Knight and Mary Asheton. He married Rosamund Lister CA 1563-1571 at prob. England.^1,2 Thomas died on 30 November 1616 at England.²

     Rosamund Lister was the daughter of Sir William Lister and Bridget Pigot. Rosamund died. She married Thomas Southworth CA 1563-1571 at prob. England.^1,2

     Of Samlesbury Hall, co. Lancaster, knighted 1547, high sheriff of Lancashire 1562, M.P. 1566, commended fro valor in Scottish war 1557, owned vast estates but was land poor, imprisoned for harboring Catholic priests. John was born circa 1526. He was the son of Sir Thomas Southworth Knight and Margery Boteler. He married Mary Asheton on 23 July 1547 at St. Leonard's, Middleton, England.^1,2 John died on 3 November 1595.

     Mary Asheton was the daughter of Sir Richard Asheton. Mary died. Of Offerton, co. Derby. She married Sir John Southworth Knight on 23 July 1547 at St. Leonard's, Middleton, England.^1,2

     Sir Thomas Southworth, Knight, of Samlesbury, high sheriff of Lancaster, fought at Flodden Field, 9 September 1513. Enlarged Samlesbury Hall, 1542-1545. Thomas was born in 1497. He was the son of Sir John de Southworth Knight and Helen de Langton. He married Margery Boteler circa 9 August 1518.^1,2 Thomas died on 13 January 1546.

     Margery Boteler was the daughter of Thomas Boteler Knight and Margaret Delves. Margery died. She married Sir Thomas Southworth Knight circa 9 August 1518.^1,2
