ROBERT de VERE, the Surety, born after 1164, became heir to his brother, Aubrey de Vere, who died without issue before September of 1214, and who was reputed to be one of the "evil councillors" of King John. Although he was hereditary lord great Chamberlain of the kingdom, Robert pursued a different course in politics from that of his brother, and became one of the principal Barons in arms against King John, a party to that covenant which resigned the custody of the City and Tower of London to the Barons, and one of those excommunicated by the Pope. In the beginning of the reign of King Henry III, after he had made his peace with that young monarch following the Battle of Lincoln, Robert was received into his favor, and was appointed one of the judges in the Court of King's Bench, but he died only a few months afterward, 25~ October 1221, and was buried in the Priory of Hatfield, Broad Oak, in Essex. His wife was Isabel, who died 3 February 124S, daughter of Hugh, second Baron de Bolebec in Northumberland. Robert was born after 1164. He was the son of Aubrey de Vere and Agnes.                    "Handsome and charming, short, slim, and strong, Edgar was the younger son of King Edmund I(939-946) and Queen AElfgifu, and was probably brought up at the court of his uncle, King Eadred (946-955), and his brother, Eing Eadwig (955-959). Chosen king in Mercia and the Danelaw in 957, it was only when Eadwig died that he was proclaimed king of all the English. His reputation among European rulers and in the Middle Ages rested partly on his association with Archbishop Dunstan, and his patronage of Bishops AEthelwold and Oswald and the monastic reform movement. The Regularis concordia (Monastic Agreement c.970) praised him as the glorious, by the grace of Christ illustrious king of the English and of the other peoples dwelling within the bounds of the island of Britain. He was spared Viking attacks and so was able to treat the south and the Danelaw as intergral parts of his kingdom. He led an expedition against the king of Gwynedd (c.968) and established friendly relations with Kenneth II by ceding Lothian; he conciliated his Danish subjects by employing some in his service. Edgar's dominion was signalled by a series of self-conscious acts c.973: his coronation at Bath which was reminiscent of the crowing of his kinsman, Otto the Great, as German emperor (952), and the formal submission of British, Scottish, and Welsh kings at Chester, where they supposedly rowed him on the Dee. He raised new fleets (shipfyrd) and was remembered as having sailed round his kingdom every wintr and spring! His coinage (c.973) was uniform throughout the realm and used as a model during the next two centuries. A stern and uncompromising judge, he instilled order in the realm and promoted effective government. Yet when he died, a succession dispute arose on behalf of his two sons, one of whom, Edward "the Martyr", was murdered (978). 1 He was a King. was born in 943.2 He was the son of Edmund, "The Magnificent" King of England and St. Alfgifu.                    Though overshadowed by his father Alfred and upstaged by his son Athelstan, it was Edward who reconquered much of England from the Danes (909-919), permanently united Mercia with Wessex (918-919), established an administration for the kingdom of England, and secured the allegiance of Danes, Scots, Britons, and English. Well educated and well trained by Alfred, he nevertheless had to overcome a rival for the throne (899-903). Using Alfred's methods and in alliance with Mercia, he spread English influence and control. The Danes of Northumbria were defeated (910) at Tettenhall (Staffs.), the Viking kingdom of York acknowledged his power (918), and most Welsh kings submitted to him. In 921 the submissino not only of Viking York and Northumbria but also of the kings of Strathclyde and the Scots gave his kingdom primacy in the British Isles. Edward was a patient planner and systematic organizer as well as a bold soldier. By the time he died, he had completed the New Minster at Winchester where he himself was buried. Though twice married, his eldest son and successor, Athelstan, was the son of a mistress.1 He was a King. was born in 875.
